Read an excerpt of Bill Crow's, "Jazz Anecdotes," published by Oxford University Press, 1990.

"Vinnie Bell had a record that was getting a lot of action on the charts one year and he wanted to know the latest figures, so between record dates in Manhattan he rushed into the newsstand at the Americana Hotel and said, 'Where's your Cash Box?' The counterman, staring at the guitar case Vinnie was carrying, threw up his hands and cried, 'Take it easy! Don't shoot! I'll give you anything you want!...'

It took Vinnie several minutes to calm him down enough to be able to buy 'the magazine' he wanted."
